Hello Beautiful Souls,
Oh, the Equinox! Haven't we all craved for this, through the long dark months of winter? Around Imbolc we've begun to feel the return of the light, but now, now the days are actually longer than the nights! Like our ancestors, we've made it once again!
Here in Avalon, at the Spring Equinox we celebrate the Great Goddess in Her shape of Mother of Fire. We dress the Temple in Her spring greens, we gather together for loads of ceremonies and celebrations, both inside and out on Her sacred land of Avalon, and we sing Her ancient names. Let me tell you a little bit about who She is to us...
One of the ancient names of the Mother of Fire is Artha. Artha is the Bear Goddess, who was honoured here in Brigid's Isles and on the continent by our Celtic ancestors, long before the Romans came. Spring is the time when She awakens from Her long hibernation and appears from Her cave, walking on Her hind legs, tall, powerful and fully in posession of Her strength, ready to do what it takes to protect Her cubs. We can feel Her strength in the winds that storm through the land at this time of year and we feel Her energy in our bodies, as we shake off winter and rest, and start moving again, getting up, getting out and buzzing like Her bees. Let Her storms blow through your life and allow Her to tear away all that's stale and stagnant, saying yes! to life and to feeling your own bear strength rise in your body!
She is the sacred candle flame on our altars and the transformative fire of our community fires at Spring Equinox, Beltane and Samhain.
Her fires of volcanoes, lightning strike and forest fire may seem destructive when out of control, yet are still of Her nature and agents of transformation, preparing the land for new life.
She is the energetic fire within, of our passions, our enthusiasm, of the intellect, of all that strikes a spark within us and inspires us. If you're planning a fire ceremony for the Equinox, we have some really fantastic fire pokers in the shop, made by Matthew.
If you don't have garden and are not so much a friend of cut flowers, then we have some really beautiful flower crowns in the shop and also beautifully felted garlands to decorate your altar - or wear as a neclace!
Luna Moonhare is a really wonderful book by Wendy Andrew, about journeying with the Goddess through the seasons of the year. It is fantastic to read to young children at every turning of the wheel really, but especially at this time of the Spring Equinox because the main character Luna is Her magical hare. If you don't have any small children to read it to, I promise you will still enjoy the poetry and the extraordinary artwork!
Take some time this Equinox to connect to the Mother of Fire. If you can, come to some of the events that are happening in Glastonbury. Allow yourself to be held in the beautiful space of the temple. If you're visiting, please make sure to pop into the shop and say hello, and you'll probably find some gorgeous Goddess gifts to take home and to remind you of your time in Avalon. Walk the land wherever you live and find Her there - really invite Her fiery presence into your life. I hope you have a blissful spring time with Artha!
With Equinox blessings from Avalon,
